What to wear to a family photo session

In some previous post I did a few suggestions about what you should wear to maternity photo session as well as to a baby photo session. This time I touch the subject once again and advise you on what you should wear to a family photo session, where the kids may be a bit older and may have siblings.

I usually advise families to try and coordinate the colors. Please avoid the typical jeans and white t-shirts for all. The goal of the session is to also capture the different personalities and the clothes you choose have an essential role there. As I mentioned in the previous posts, you can pick two or three colors and mix those with some neutral tones as well (white, grey). One thing you should avoid is logos and cartoons on shirts, because they end up being a huge distraction in the final image. However, there are exceptions, and if a t-shirt with a major cartoon is your kids favorite at the moment, it makes sense to include it in the session, even for a few pictures. That’s the kind of detail that shows the kid’s personality and that you will love to remember in the years to come.

Regarding patterns (stripes, polka dot, plaid shirts), yes use them but not too  much.: avoid mixing different patterns (it’s not easy to make them all work). One of you may wear a pattern while others wear something solid with colors present in that pattern. You can also mix those solid shirts with a scarf or a cardigan or any other element that offers a different texture as well.

What to wear to a newborn/baby photo session?

A few weeks ago, I published a post on what to wear to a maternity session. Today I bring you some suggestions on what you and your baby should wear for the photo session after he is born.

Concerning your baby, the most important thing is that he’s comfortable. Clothes that are easy to undress may come in handy for a quick change of diapers. In case you want some images of your baby without clothes we will do them in those moments before putting on a new diaper. I also always advise the parents to have a blanket near by, because there’s nothing like the coziness of a comfortable blanket involving the baby.

If you some special things like an outfit that was an aunt’s present or a handmade blanket from the grandmother, those are special elements that we can include in the session and that will give some extra meaning to the final images. The grandmother and even the baby himself will love to have and look at those images in a few years.

Regarding the parents and eventual siblings, and since this session takes place at your home, you can wear something comfortable and more laid back, but that makes you feel good and beautiful (or handsome). You can even be barefoot if that will make you feel more relaxed and that feeling will be reflected in the images.

You can (and should) coordinate your colors by picking one or two and mixing some neutral colors as well, just like I mentioned here.

What to wear to a maternity photo session

“What to wear for sessions?” is a question that families are constantly asking and we always talk about that before the session, so that families love to see themselves in the images.

For this kind of sessions, the main idea is to show off the belly so, tight but comfortable clothes are ideal. If you love images of the belly without clothes, a simple top might be sufficient. And you can also add a simple cardigan, it works well every time.

Regarding colors, this is a common issue for all kinds of sessions. The way to go is to coordinate the colors and avoid showing up all in the same clothes. The simplest way to do that is to pick one or two colors and you can use different shades of those colors. You can also mix them with a more neutral color (such as grey or bege).

I also like to suggest families to bring accessories like a scarf or hat (if that’s you), for instance, in order to have different textures and layers. One of you can wear a pattern as well while the others wear solids with colors present in that pattern.

The most important thing is that the clothes you wear reflect who you are. For instance, if you love to wear jeans and t-shirt (yep, that’s me!) it probably won’t make sense for you to wear a formal dress and high heels.
